Simon and Chabris Flashcards
What is the first aim of Simon and chabris?
To investigate whether particularly unusual events are likely to be detected.
What is the second aim of Simon and Chabris?
To investigate if a more difficult task increase the fate of the inattentional business.
What is the third aim of Simon and Chabris?
To investigate the effect of superimposition and transparency of characters in a video.
What was Simon and Chabris sample?
192 undergraduates
Originally 228 but 36 were eliminated as they would’ve reduced validity of results.
Equally distributed across conditions.
How did Simon and Chabris get there participants?
Through Volunteer sampling.
What research method did Simon and Chabris use?
Lab experiment
What was the IV of the study in Simon and Chabris?
Participants conditions( g Transparent,umbrella,white,easy)
Was simon and chabris a independent measures design or a repeated measures design?
Independent measures
Outline Simon and Chabris procedure.
1.P’s were tested alone
2. Told to count the number of passes that the basketball players passed, depending on condition easy= how many passes, hard= how many bounce and aerial passes
3.Whilst this an unusual event would occur like a woman with an umbrella or a gorilla would walk through the basketball players,
4.After, the p’s were asked questions ‘Did you see anything unusual?’ if answer yes then they had to provide details.
What was the Main finding from Simon and Chabris study?
Only 54% noticed the unexpected event and 46% missed it.
What was the result in relation to aim 1?
More p’s noticed the lady with an umbrella than the gorilla
What was the result in relation to aim 2?
More p’s noticed the unexpected event in the easy condition than the heard condition.
What was the result in relation to aim 3?
More p’s noticed the unexpected event in the opaque condition compared to the transparent.
What was the conclusion for aim 1?
People are more likely to notice unexpected event if they are visually similar to event paid attention to.
What was the conclusion for aim 2?
Inattentional blindness is more likely when task is hard
