Maguire Flashcards
What is the sample of Maguires study?
16 Male taxi drivers, all right handed, all licensed taxi drivers, mean age 44
16 Male non-taxi drivers, matched on age,all right handed.
What research method?
Quasi
How did Maguire conduct his study?
1.Scan of the taxi drivers brains, whilst the scans of the non-taxi drivers were taken from the MRI scan
2.All scans were analyzed by VBM which identifies grey matter density in regions of the brain. They compared taxi drivers and non-taxi drivers.
3.Pixel counting compared the volume of the anterior (front),body and posterior (back) cross sections of the hippocampi, of taxi drivers and 16 matched non-taxi drivers.
What apparatus did Maguire use?
MRI scanner
Scans then analyzed using VBM and Pixel counting.
What is the aim of Maguires study?
To investigate the difference in volume in the hippocampus of London taxi drivers compared to non-taxi drivers.
What were the results of Maguire’s study?
No Significant difference in overall volume but…
1. Taxi Drivers had a greater grey volume in the right and left posterior hippocampus than the non-taxi drivers.
2.Non-Taxi Drivers had a greater grey volume in the right and left anterior hippocampus than the taxi drivers.
