Physiology of the Respiratory System Flashcards
What are the functions of the respiratory system?
Gas exchange, acid base balance, protection from infection and communication
What is the function of pulmonary circulation?
Delivers carbon dioxide to the lungs and picks up oxygen and takes it to the heart
What is the pulmonary artery?
Artery that travel away from the heart towards the lungs. The only artery that carries deoxygenated blood.
What is the pulmonary vein?
Vein that travels towards the heart from the lungs. The only vein that carries oxygenated blood.
What does integration of respiratory and cardiovascular systems allow?
Movement of gases between the air and the body’s cells. External respiration.
Where does gas exchange occur in the lungs?
Alveoli
What are the average volumes of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchanged per minute?
250ml of oxygen
200ml of carbon dioxide
What is the average breathing rate?
10-20 breaths per minute
What is the respiratory system responsible for?
Removing carbon dioxide and acquiring oxygen
