Physical factors - Malaria Flashcards
Physical - Temp
> Must be between 15-40oC TMT the Anopheles mosquito
survives in these areas.
> eg) they are found in 100 different tropical regions of
the world - large areas of Africa, Asia, Central + South
America, Hati + The Dominican Republic.
Physical - Vector
> The presence of the female Anopheles mosquito. TMT it
can act as a vector for the malarial parasite.
> eg) In sub-Saharan Africa + many other malaria endemic
countries there has been a decline from a mortality of 2
million to 436,000 per year in 2018.
Physical - Humidity
> Humidity of 60%+ TMT water will not evaporate, allowing
pools of stagnant water to build up.
Physical - Shade
> Mosquitos need shade TMT they can digest the blood
meal under vegetation.
Physical - Stagnant Water
> Like paddy fields are needed to lay larvae. TMT
breeding grounds are provided for the mosquito to
breed.
> eg) In Kiagware - Kenya, when the rains arrived in July, it
would create pools of stagnant water, mosquitos would
breed + kill an average of 150 people in July per annum -
known as malaria month.
Physical - Altitude
> Mosquitoes are usually found in areas with an altitude of
up to 3000m. TIB it requires these conditions to live in.
Physical - Cattle/Humans
> Presence of blood through cattle/humans TMT the blood
provides protein for the female mosquitoes eggs,
allowing them to breed.
