consequences/problems/challenges of a rapidly growing population Flashcards
1) Increased pressure on the working population (economically active bracket). They will need to provide for over half the population.
TMT taxes increase.
2) Rapid population growth means areas will be very overcrowded. There will be a pressure or lack of housing.
TMT makeshift shacks are thrown up creating shanty towns (eg) in Rocinha in Rio de Janero. TMT sanitation will be poor as this type of housing will lack in basic amenities - eg toilets and clean water supplies.
3) Less taxes & a growing population, decisions made about what to invest in. eg) A huge pressure on schools, more teachers needed, more textbooks etc. However health clinics will need to be extended.
TMT there is a real issue & pressure on resources.
4) Require more food for the population.
TMT farmers will farm more intensively. This could lead to poorer soil & diversification causing food instability & famine. (eg) In Chad 2.2 million as of 2019 are malnourished due to drought.
5) More trees are cut down to create more farmland & to allow fuel for a growing population.
TMT this causes more diversification.
6) People become hungry due to stretched resources, move for work.
TMT there will be more overcrowding & further growth of shanty towns.
7) As the population grows, there will be a shortage of jobs.
TMT unemployment will increase, crime rates will rise & there will be growth in the informal sector. TMT you have no rights - might not get paid when off sick, no guaranteed hours - become very vulnerable.
8) Traffic congestion increases
TMT air pollution is another issue.
