Formation of a Corrie Flashcards
Stage 1 - Before Glaciation
Corries usually form a north-facing slope, TMT
the sun won’t shine on the snow, TMT it won’t melt.
More snow gathers + pressure builds up TMT
the air is squeezed out of the bottom layers creating Nêve.
TMT a glacier is formed causing erosion.
Stage 2 - During Glaciation
The ice melts under gravity TIDT
melted water lubricating between between ice + rocks.
This allows plucking to happen TMT
the back wall becomes steeper
Abrasion also occurs TMT
the rock basin is deepened
Freeze thaw action will occur TMT
water gets into rocks cracks freezes and expands meaning the back wall is weakened by big rocks.
Stage 3
A rock lip is formed when the glacier looses its energy from melting TMT
a lochan gets trapped behind it
