Human factors - Malaria Flashcards
Human - Houses
> can create areas of shade for the mosquitoes to rest
TMT mosquitoes will find shade to digest their blood
meal then use humans for further supply of blood.
Human - Migration + Global Air Travel
> contributes to the spread of malaria. TIB the parasite is
carried to areas which did not have malaria before.
Human - Poor Sanitation
> in shanty towns areas of stagnant water can contribute
to the spreading of the disease. TIB rubbish can fill with
water, providing breeding grounds.
Human - Carelessness
> not sleeping under a bed net or not wearing insect
repellent TMT mosquitoes will bite, spreading malaria
further. eg) there were 435,000 deaths in 2017 from
malaria.
Human - Settlements
> provide large populations TMT mosquitoes can feast on
human blood meals. eg) Nigeria is the country with the
largest problem of malaria, it is estimated there are 100
million cases with over 300,000 deaths per year.
Human - Civil war
> bomb creators are left behind after war TMT breeding
grounds are created for the mosquitoes. eg) in Vietnam
there are lots created by the Vietnamese war in 1955-
1975.
Human - Marshlands
> if marshlands, irrigation ditches dams or reservoirs are drained, TMT there will be pools of stagnant water in which mosquitoes can use to breed.
