phylum cnidaria (hydra, coral, sea anemones) Flashcards
what four animals are in phylum chidaria
hydra. jellyfish. coral. sea anemones.
describe major characteristics of chidaria
adult bodies hace chidocytes and radial symmetry
aquatic, mostly marine
heterotrophic
only endoderm and ectoderm
what are chidocytes
stinging cells
describe the body plan of chidaria
two body forms -
a mobile medusa
sessile (non mobile)
tenticles arranged around an opening to sac-like body
what do tentacles contain
many unique stinging cells that eject a barbed thread and possibly a toxin
what do tentacles do
capture prey and push them into the gastrovascular cavity where digestion occurs
describe the nervous system
simple muscle fibers and nerve fibers, so animals are capable of directional movement no ganglion (grouping if nerves)
describe the sexual reproduction
each medusa develops and forms gametes
a bilaterally symmetrical larva-planula developed from zygotes
the planula settles in an appropriate location and grows into the adult location and grows into the adult polyp,
describe the asexual reproduction
once the polyp has grown into an adult, it being budding and forms medusae
describe class antheza (sea anemones and corals)
uhh
where on the body of a cnidarian are stinging cells located
tentacles
describe the adult bodies
stinging cells, radial symmetry, aquatic, endoderm and ectoderm
