photosynthetic process Flashcards
what is the mesophyll?
tissue in interoir of leaf where chlorplasts are found
what are stomata?
pores which gases enter and exit by
what is the stroma?
a dense fluidsurrounded by two membranes
what are thylakloids?
sacs within the stroma
what are thylakloid spaces?
areas in middle of thylakloids
what are granums?
stacks of thylakloid membranes
where is chlorophyll II located?
in thylakloid membranes
what is the overall equation?
6co2 + 6h2o +light energy —> glucose and 6o2
what are the two stages called?
light reactions and calvin cycle
what are the stages of light reactions?
water is split providing h+ ions and o2 exits leaf.
light energy which is absorbed by pigments excites electrons and h from water moving them up to next energy level and to acceptor nadp+
light reactions use solar energy to reduce nadp to nadph
also generates atp using chemioosmosis to add phosphate to adp in phosphorylation process
what are the stages of the calvin cycle?
stage 1 : carbon fixation
stage 2: reduction
stage 3: regeneration of co2 acceptor (rubp)
explain stages of calvin cycle?
phase 1: incorporated co2 form air by fixing it to rubp
rubisco is the enzyme which catlyses this reaction
this forms two 3 phosphoglycerates
phase 2: each 3 phosphoglycerate recieves a phosphate from atp and a pair of electrons nadph giving g3p, a sugar. for everythree co2 = 6 g3p molecules
phase 3: sugar is an output and 3 atp used to recycle left over g3p back into rubp
