mendelian genetics Flashcards
what is a gene?
piece of DNA which encodes for a protein
what can cause a change in genetic information?
mutations
name 3 different types of mutations?
point
abnormal chromosome number
delection, duplication and rearrangment of chromosomes
what are alleles??
alternative forms of a gene
what happens if there is a specific mutation in a gene?
no,less or altered protein
what are Muller’s allele classifications? (4)
amorph / loss of function
hypomorph
hypermorph
neomorph
what is a wild type allele?
most common strain found in wild or a lab
what is the law of segregation according to mendel?
3:1
what is a test cross?
backcross with recessive parent it reveals genotype of f1
what is dihybrid?
individuals heterozygous for two characteristics being followed in a cross
what is monohybrid?
individuals heterozygous fro one characteristic being followed in a cross
what is pedigree analysis?
many human traits follow medelian inheritance patterns so pedigree allows us to deduce possible phenotypes
what causes sickle cell anemia?
point mutation
5 examples of non-mendelian inheritance?
- more than 2 alleles
- incomplete dominance
- codominance
- pleitropy
- epistasis
what is incomplete dominance?
how alleles interact i.e. snapdragons white and red = pink
