Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the site of photosynthesis?
The Chloroplast/ thylakoid membrane
Name the three main sections of the the chloroplast
Granum
Thylakoid
Stroma
Where does the Light Dependent reaction occur?
Granum
Where does the Light Independent reaction occur?
Stroma
Name nine adaptations to the leaf and how they benefit photosynthesis
Large SA to absorb as might light as possible
Arrangement of leaves minimises overlapping to prevent shadowing
Membrane contains all the enzymes required for the light dependent reaction
Thin so diffusion distance is short
Transparent cuticle + epidermis
Long narrow upper Mesophyll packed w/ chlorophyll
Numerous stomata 4 gas exchange
Stomata that open and close in response 2 changes in LI
Network of Xylem and Phloem
How do we measure Photosynthesis in an experiment?
O2 bubbles in a set time
Measure uptake of gas
Name factors that can limit photosynthesis
Light Intensity
Temperature
CO2 concentration
Describe the Light Dependent Reaction
Chlorophyll absorbs light energy and pair of electrons raised to a higher energy level= Photoionisation .
Photolysis of water increases hydrogen ion con. as well as them being pumped in via proton pump. The protons only exit via ATP synthase to create ATP and the hydrogens reduce NADP
Describe Photoionisation
Chlorophyll absorbs light energy and pair of electrons raised to a higher energy level
What are the products of the photolysis of water
4 protons
4 electrons
O2
Describe the light independent reaction.
CO2 diffuses into stomata and dissolves in H2O
Ribulose Bisphosphate + CO2= Glycerate 3-phosphate. Catalysed by Rubisco
Then this is turned into Triose-Phosphate after reduced NADP becomes NADP and goes back to LDR and ATP hydrolysis into ADP and Pi.
Triose Phosphate can either be turned into organic substance like glucose or recombine to make Ribulose Bisphosphate
What products from the LDR that are used in the LIR
ATP Reduced NADPH
