Photosynthesis Flashcards
Energy is stored in
ATP
Energy is needed for
Active transport
Cell division
Movement
Protein production
Photosynthesis
The process by which plants use energy from the sun, via the chloroplasts to produce sugars, oxygen
Chlorophyll
The green pigment within chloroplast.
Chloroplasts
Organelles in plant cells which capture sunlight and use it , along with carbon dioxide and water to manufacture sugars and oxygen
Light dependent stage
The stage of photosynthesis which is powered by sunlight. During this process the plant makes energy which is used in the later stages of photosynthesis.
Light independent stage
The stage of photosynthesis which is not dependent on sunlight. The energy storing compounds which were created in the light depended reactions are used to produce sugars, carbon dioxides, water
Carbon fixation
Carbon dioxide taken from the atmosphere and incorporated into the plants structure
Energy transformation
The changing of heat energy to chemical energy
Light intensity
The strength of light
Light quality
This refers to the wavelength of the light
Carbon dioxide
A gas which makes up approximately 2.4% of the atmosphere. It is produced by respiration(breathing) and by burning fuels
Chloroplast has membranes where are they
Outer
Inner membranes - thylakoid membrane
What is the grana
Grana forms a stack of flattened disks
What is stroma
Gel like liquid surrounding stroma
What else is found in chloroplast
Enzymes
DNA
Ribosomes
Photosynthesis is a reduction reaction because
It releases oxygen
Equation of photosynthesis?
6co2 + 12 h20—> c6h12o6+6h20+602
How do you test for starch ?
Feet arch the pants by placing then in a dark cupboard for less than 12 hrs.
Leave the leaves in the sun after that for a specified amount of time
Boil the leaf until it’s flaccid
Immerse 90% alcohol until it’s decolourised .
Then place in KI.
Factors required for photosynthesis
Iight Carbon dioxide Water Chlorophyll Temperature
How’d u test for the presence of co2?
Place one leaf in a flask
The flask must be filled with KI
other leaf flask in water
De starch both leaves
Why do we test starch if we want to know that photosynthesis is happening ?
Glucose is stored as starch because glucose will make cells plasmolysis if they existed in the cell as they are
What form co2 is used by aquatic plants
Hydrogen carbonate
Carbonic acid
How do you test if light is a limiting factor of photosynthesis ?
Cover a de starched leaf with black paper for a small part . Then test the leaf with iodine for starch . A part of it would be blue while the other part will be blue
Solid with low levels of magnesium and nitrogen would mean
There would be less of no chlorophyll in the chloroplasts of the plants growing on that soil. This is why leaves are sometimes yellow
When the plant reaches its light compensation point what does that mean ?
Amount of oxygen produced in photosynthesis =amount of oxygen released in respiration
Amount of co2 released in AR=amount of CO2 absorbed in P
Amount of glucose produced =amount of glucose used
Action spectrum
Shows the rate of photosynthesis
Emission spectrum
Shows the amount of light being absorbed in each wavelength
Which light passes easily in water
Red
How do u measure how much if light is being absorbed by a plant
Apply blue
