Pharynx/larynx Flashcards
What are the 5 layers of the pharynx?
- Buccopharyngeal fasica
- Muscular layer
- pharyngobasilar (fibrous) layer
- Submucosa
- mucous membrane
Branches of vagus in the neck to know
- superior laryngeal- external and internal
- recurrent laryngeal
- pharyngeal
- auricular
innervation of pharynx by
IX, X, XI via pharyngeal plexus
cartilages of the larynx
thryoid, cricoid, epiglottis, arytenoid (paired), corniculate (paired), cuneiform (paired)
vocal and vestibular ligaments are formed by which layers of mucosa?
intermediate and deep
true vocal cord is?
vocal fold
false vocal cord?
vestibular fold
the vocal folds control 4 basic aspects of physiology
- air going in and out of lungs.
- protective sphincter
- to produce sound
- maintenence of intra-thoracic and intra-abdominal pressure (lifting heavy objects, bearing down, pooping, birth)
intrinsic muscles of the larynx are IN GENERAL innervated by
recurrent laryngeal (from arches 5&6)
which single laryngeal muscle is not innervated by the RLN?
cricothyroid- innervated by the superior laryngeal n.
what does the posterior cricoaretynoid m. do?
only abductor of vocal cords (apart)
what does the cricothyroid do?
tenses the vocal cords
what is the function of having a high larynx?
can breathe and eat at the same time- seen in babies- so they can drink milk and breathe at the same time
what is the advantage to having the descent of the larynx?
gained a large permanent oropharynx to form a greater variety of sounds
