Pharynx Flashcards
What are the 3 divisions of the pharynx?
Nasopharynx
Oropharynx
Laryngopharynx
What is the adenoid?
,ass of mucosa associated with lymphatic tissue
What does the pharyngotympnic tube connect?
Connects tympanic cavity with the nasopharynx
What is adenoiditis?
Inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsil
What is the adenoid also called?
Pharyngeal tonsils
Where can adenoiditis spread?
Spread of infection to tubal tonsils (obstruction of pharyngotympanic tube)
Spread of infection to middle ear (otitis media)
Describe the palatine tonsils
Ovoid mass of lymphatic tissue in the lateral wall of oropharynx
What is the piriform fossa?
A small depression of the laryngopharyngeal cavity
What innervates the pharynx? (Motor)
Vagus nerve
What are the muscles of the pharynx?
Pharyngeal constructors
What are the 3 constructor muscles of the pharynx?
Superior
Middle
Inferior
What nerve initiates the gag reflex?
Vagus (accessory)
When are the constrictor muscles activated?
Swallowing
What is the sensory innervation to the pharynx?
Glossopharyngeal
Is the vagus nerve para or sympathetic?
Parasympathetic
What constructs the lower part of the pharynx?
Thyropharyngeus
What muscle prevents influx?
Cricopharyngeus
What is this muscle and its function?
Elevate the pharynx, may assist in opening of pharyngotympanic tube
What are the 4 steps in swallowing?
Describe the 4 stages of swallowing
Where is the superior cervical ganglion located?
External surface of the pharynx (middle constrictor)
What does the pharyngeal branch of vagus not supply?
Stylopharyngeus
What supplies the stylopharyngeus?
Glossopharyngeal
What nerves are responsible for the gag reflex?
Hypoglossal CNX
Accessory CNIX
What does the CNIX supply in the gag reflex?
Afferent limb of gag reflex
