Deep neck structures 2 Flashcards
Where does the cervical plexus lie?
Superficial to the scalenus medius
What covers the cervical plexus?
Sternocleidomasteoid
What does C1 innervate along with the hypoglossal n.?
Geniohyoid and thyrohyoid
What does the C1 give off?
Superior limb of Ansa cervicalis
What does the C2/C3 portion of the ansa cervicalis give rise to?
Transverse cervical nerve
Lesser occipital
Great uricular
What does the spinal accessory nerve join with?
Cranial accessory nerve
What is the posterior boundary of the root of the neck?
Body of T1
Where do the first 2 inter coastal eateries arise from?
Coatocervical trunk of the subclavian artery
Where does the vertebral artery enter after exiting the atlas?
The posterior atlantooccipital membrane
What are the 2 main divisions of the head?
Regional and terminal
What are the regional nodes?
Sunmental
Submandibular
Parotid
Posterior auricular
What does the submental node drain?
Tip of tongue
Chin
Lower lip
What does the parotid gland drain?
Scalp
Auricle
Lateral eyelids
Middle ear
Where do the deep cervical lymph nodes lie?
Beneath the SCM
What are the terminal nodes?
Deep cervical nodes
What are the 2 groups of terminal nodes (DCN)?
Superior DCN
jugulodigastric node
What does the jugulodigastric drain from and to?
Drains tonsillar areas and tongue
Deinstalls to the inferior groups or directly to jugular trunks
During tonsillitis, what node is enlarged?
Jugulodigastric
What does the jugulo-omohyoid node drain?
Tongue
What side does the thoracic trunk lie?
Left
What drains the right side?
Bronchomediastinal trunk
Where does the thoracic trunk drain into?
Jugular trunk
Where does the bronchomediastinal trunk drain to?
Right subclavian vein
What are the 3 regions of the cervical sympathetic trunk?
Superior
Middle
Inferior
Where do the cervical sympathetic trunk receive fibres from?
From superior thoracic spinal nerves
What do cervical sympathetic branches pass to the head along with?
Internal and external carotid arteries
What does the sympathetic ganglia lie behind?
Carotid sheath
Does the sympathetic trunk cause vaso-constriction or dilation?
Dilators
What occurs if the sympathetic trunk is affected?
Pupillary constriction
Dies to paralysis of the dilator papillae muscle in the iris
What is ptosis?
Lowering of the upper eyelid
What causes sinking if the eye?
Paralysis of the orbitalis muscle
(Effected sympathetic trunk)
