Clerks that assist pharmacists in the pharmacy, technically not pharm techs in a community setting
Registered pharmacy technicians definition
Individuals who are registered in the state, only applies to people who practice in institutional settings
How many registered pharm techs can there be per 1 RPH?
1:2 RPh to registered pharm tech ratio
How many unlicensed personnel can there be per 1 RPh?
1:4 RPh to unlicensed personnel ratio
How many registered pharm techs and unlicensed personnel can there be per 1 RPh?
4 TOTAL per 1 RPh
Exception to the pharmacy personnel ratio
People filling med carts are exempted; pharmacy interns/APPE/IPPE students are also exempt
Unlicensed personnel responsibilities
Receive written or electronically transmitted prescriptions
Typing Rx labels
Keying Rx data for entry into a computer-generated file or retrieving data from the file
Obtaining and returning drugs to stock
Obtaining Rx files or other manual records and location scripts
Counting/filling/labeling drugs
Prepare manual records for signature or initials of RPh
Handing or delivering Rx to patient or person acting on behalf of patient
Advising on availability of counseling to be conducted by RPh or intern
What can registered pharmacy techs do that unlicensed personnel can’t?
Compounding
Preparing
Labeling
Dispensing of drugs
May fill valid Rxs or orders for patients served by the facility or for tasks requiring no professional judgement
They can also do all the tasks of unlicensed personnel- it’s just that these additional tasks are limited to registered techs!
How to become a registered pharmacy tech?
File an application with the NYSED
High school diploma or equivalent
Certification from a nationally recognized pharm tech certification program acceptable to NYSED
≥18 years old
Be of good moral character
Fees
Registered pharm tech fees
$75 for initial license, $100 for initial registration period, and then $100 for each triennial registration period
