Pharmacology Principles Flashcards
Phase 1: Pharmaceutical
-All oral drugs must go through dissolution in order to be absorbed
-Dissolves in stomach
Three Phases of Drug Action
- Pharmaceutic Phase
- Pharmacokinetic Phase
- Pharmacodynamic Phase`
Phase 2: Pharmacokinetic Phase
-Drug moving through the body and what the body does to the drug
-Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion
Phase 2: Absorption (Pharmacokinetic Phase)
Occurs in small intestines to be absorbed into blood
Phase 2: Distribution (Pharmacokinetic Phase)
Drug leaving blood through cell membrane to the site of action (where its intended to exert effects)
Phase 2: Metabolism/ Biotransformation (Pharmacokinetic Phase)
-Once drug has exerted its effects it is broken down by the liver
-Drug goes from lipid soluble metabolite to water soluble metabolite
Phase 2: Excretion (Pharmacokinetic Phase)
Kidneys excrete the water soluble metabolite
Which phase does IV drug skip?
Absorption
Drugs must be _________ to pass through phospholipid membrane
lipid soluble
__________ drugs require passage through channels or pores
Water soluble
