PHARMACOLOGY Flashcards
what parts of the body does oral drug absorption involve
the gastrointestinal tract and the liver
what does first pass mtabolism involve
the liver
what is bioavailabilty
the fraction of a dose reaching the systemic circulation after oral dosing
what does first pass metabolism mean
refers to the amount of drug which is metabolised on its first pass through the liver
what is a ligand
something that binds to a biological target
what is an endogenous ligand
a natural chemical produced by the body to bind to the biological target
what is a drug
an exogenous liana that generates a physiological response
what do acidic drugs mainly bind to
bind mainly to albumin
what do basic drugs mainly bind to
to alpha-1 acid glycolprotein
what is the purpose of protein binding
to reduce the clearance of the drug from the body and enhancing the duration of its action
what happens to the protein bound protein once it leaves circulation
it is unbound so that its molecular weight decreases and it can then be removed by the kidneys
