General Personality Disorder
- enduring pattern of behavior that is markedly deviated from culturally sanctioned behavior
- manifest symptoms that are affective, cognitive, impulsive control, interpersonal (at least 2 of these areas)
- very inflexible and pervasive, enduring
- don’t need to have mood contingent
- personality disorders don’t require an affect to go along with it
- need to have perceived onset at or around adolescence or early adulthood
Cluster A
- odd, eccentric
- paranoid
- schizoid
- schizotypal
Cluster B
- dramatic, emotional, theatrical, erratic
- antisocial
- borderline
- histrionic
- narcissistic
Cluster C
- fearful, anxious
- avoidant
- dependent
- obsessive compulsive personality disorder
Paranoid Personality Disorder
- pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of everyone
- they are always suspicious of people whether or not they are nice or mean
Schizoid Personality Disorder
- detachment from social relationships
- really struggle with interpersonal relationships
- schizoid does not need social neglect
- no secure attachments
Schizotypal Personality Disorder
- similar issues around interpersonal deficits
- cognitive or perceptual distortions or eccentricities of behaviors
- odd beliefs or magical thinking that influences behavior, unusual delusions, some suspicious and paranoid ideations
Antisocial Personality Disorder
- pervasive disregard and violation of other people
- they don’t care about the well being of others
- needs to occur at age 15 (conduct disorder) but cannot diagnose until 18
Borderline Personality Disorder
- the most excited and the most traumatizing and difficult and lovable patients
- you feel drawn to them and the need to help them and support them
- “shell of a person”, “no real personality”,”there is nothing behind it, feel like they are empty”
- pervasive pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, self image and affect marked by impulsivity and rapid changes in mood
Histrionic Personality Disorder
- pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking behaviors often times geared through seductive and sexual inappropriate behaviors
- using body to gain attention–very attention seeking, very shallow shifts of emotional expressions
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
- always challenging you
- pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration and lack of empathy
- if they see you as equal footing they will seek approval to confirm their greatness
- can be very exploitative and manipulative
Avoidant Personality Disorder
- pervasive pattern of social inhibition and hyper sensitivity to negative evaluations
- try to avoid situations that can make them be evaluated
Dependent Personality Disorder
- need to be taken care of that makes them fear separation
- could look like reactive attachment, separation anxiety disorder
- can latch onto anyone
Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder
- no relief for this disorder
- there’s rigidity around a specific thought and behavior
