General Knowledge for DSM Flashcards
Discuss the differences between a somatogenic v.s. psychogenic perspective of mental health disorder.
Somatogenic– biological and logical so we can use medication to treat it
Psychogenic– psychological factors, originating in the mind or in mental or emotional conflict
Describe the main organizational difference from the DSM-IV-TR to the DSM 5.
DSM-IV-TR is categorical so it can have easier and quicker assessment, it’s more binary so there will be a lot of symptoms overlap that we can’t really tell or give a right diagnosis.
DSM 5 is dimensional so it puts in age and cultural issues which can make us to give more specific diagnosis and it’s a range in which it can exist.
Within the DSM-III onwards until the DSM 5, there was a Bereavement Exclusion listed as a qualifying criteria for the diagnosis of MDD. What justification(s) is provided that merits the removal of the Bereavement Exclusion from the DSM 5?
The justification for removing the merit is that the two can actually be comorbid. So the removal is preventing us from underestimate it.
