all personality disorders affect at least two of these areas:
- Way of thinking about oneself and others
- Way of responding emotionally
- Way of relating to other people
- Way of controlling one’s behavior
antisocial personality disorder =
- pattern of disregarding/violating the right of others
- no conforming to social norms
- repeatedly lie or deceive others
- act impulsively
avoidant personality disorder=
- extreme shyness, feelings of inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to criticism
- unwilling to get involved with people unless they are certain of being liked
- preoccupied with being criticized or rejected
- view themselves as not being good enough or socially inept
- difficulty forming social relationships
borderline personality disorder=
- instability in personal relationships
- intense emotions
- poor self-image
- impulsivity
- may go to great lengths to avoid being abandoned
- repeated suicide attempts
- inappropriate intense anger
- ongoing feelings of emptiness
dependent personality disorder=
- needing to be taken care of
- submissive and clingy behaviours
- difficulties making decisions without reassurance from others
- uncomfortable or helpless when alone, because of fear of inability to take care of themselves
histrionic personality disorder=
- excessive emotion and attention-seeking
- uncomfortable when they are not the center of attention
- may use physical appearance to draw attention to themselves
- have rapidly shifting or exaggerated emotions
narcissistic personality disorder=
- need for admiration and lack of empathy for others
- grandiose sense of self-importance
- sense of entitlement
- take advantage of others
- lack empathy
obsessive-compulsive personality disorder=
- preoccupation with orderliness, perfection and control
- overly focused on details or schedules
- work ecvessively
- not allowing time for leasure or friends
- inflexible in their morality and values
paranoid personality disorder=
- suspicious of others and seeing them as mean or spiteful
- assume people will harm or deceive them and dont confide in others or become close to them
schizoid personality disorder=
- detached from social relationships and expressing little emotion
- does not seek close relationships
- chooses to be alone
- seems not to care about praise or criticism from others
schizotypal personality disorder=
- uncomfortable in close relationships
- distorted thinking and eccentric behaviours
- odd beliefs
- odd behaviour
- odd speech
- excessive social anxiety
sociopaths vs psychopaths
sociopaths = informele term voor antisocial PD. psychopaths geen officiele diagnose.
Sociopath is a term people use to describe someone who is apparently without conscience and is hateful or hate-worthy. Sociopaths have a limited, weak ability to feel empathy and remorse.
The term psychopath is used to describe people with little to no consciouse, but are able to follow social conventions when it suits their needs. They do pretend to care. Have relationships that are shallow and fake. But maintain a normal life as a cover for criminal activity.

emotional, dramatic, erratic
- borderline (instabiliteit, intense emotions)
- narcissistic (grandiose)
- antisocial (disregard, deceit, manipulation)
- histrionic (attention seeking, emotional)
cluster C
anxious, fearful
- avoidant (social inhibition & feelings of inadequacy)
- dependent (excessive need to be taken care of)
- obsessive-compulsive (perfectionism, orderliness, control)
