What do you understand by the term ‘POMS’?
- A way of measuring the moods of those who participate in sport
- Tension, depression, anger, vigour, fatigue confusion
- Shown on a graph
- Successful elite performers show the iceberg profile which shows that these athletes have high levels of vigour and lower levels of other measures
- however not all performers have this profile
Discuss the suggestion that Morga’s POMS is an effective method of identifying potential elite performers
-Is effective- successful elite performers usually show the iceberg profile
- Some elite performers don’t show this profile
- May be that elite prefers develop the positive mood states as a result of success and do not show these mood states before becoming successful

=B-F(PXE)
-Therefore behaviour can alter in different situations
-E.g Hollanders model
-Identify aspects of behaviour to be changed
-Coach can change the environment in order to change behaviour
What are the characteristics of an individual with a motive to achieve success?
- Focused
- Values feed back
- Not afraid to fail
- Seek out challenges
- High task persistence
Discuss the suggestion that personality questionnaires can be an effective predictor of performance
- Personality questionnaires such as the need to achieve or the need to avoid failure personality questionnaire can be useful as often certain personalities are associated with certain sports
- However, there is no clear evidence that personality has a link with type of sport or success
- Also performers are able to lie in these tests so may be unreliable
