What do we mean by the term attitude? (1)
An attitude is a predisposition towards an attitude object and is made up of beliefs, feelings and behaviour
Using the triadic model, describe the characteristics of a positive attitude (3)
Cognitive aspects- belief that the activity is worthwhile
Affective aspects- enjoyment of the activity
Behavioural aspects- The athlete participates regularly
Explain the term attitude and suggest how attitudes are formed (3)
Attitudes are predispositions to an attitude object and are made up of cognitive, affective and behaviour components. Attitudes are formed through past experiences, social learning, conditioning and familiarity. If a performer has had success is something they are likely to have a positive attitude towards it. Aldo social learning plats a role such as through watching role models and peers. If behaviour has been followed by rewards the performer will be encouraged to repeat the behaviour. Finally, increased exposure is likely to form a positive attitude
Explain how persuasive communication can be used to change an attitude
One way to change an attitude is through persuasive communication. This is where a persuader such as a coach attempts to change the attitude of an athlete. Factors which effect the success of this includes the status of the persuader, the quality of the message and the individuals resistance to change
Explain how cognitive dissonance can be used to change an attitude
This is where the performer alters one part of the triadic model so that each component is consistent with each other. This reduces tension resulting from having contradictory beliefs. For example, the performer could alter their training so that they enjoy it and therefore changes the affective com[onent
