Explain the terms aggression and instrumental aggression (3)
A
Aggression is behaviour with an intent to harm, outside the rules and towards humans
Instrumental aggression is aggression that harms as a means to achieving another goal. It is behaviour within the rules and harm is accidental

Using examples from sport, explain the frustration aggression hypothesis (4)
A
- Frustration is a psychological state that occurs when satisfaction is made difficult or impossible
- Being prevented from achieving our goal leads to us feeling frustration
- Frustration then leads to aggression
- Aggression can have a cathartic effect which reduces levels of frustration

Discuss how theories of aggression can be applied to sport

Instinct theory
- Aggressive behaviour is inherited and not learnt
- We all have the potential
- Aggressive impulses build up and can be damaging if not released. Therefore is is necessary to release that destructive energy and this can occur through aggressive acts either legal and acceptable ways or illegal unacceptable ways
Social learning
- We copy the aggressive acts of others
- E.g from TV
Frustration aggression theory
- The blocking of goals leads to frustration which leads to aggression
- Aggressive cues makes aggression more likely
