Personality Flashcards
Define personality
Personality is a unique psychological make up of a person
What is trait theory
Trait theory is the idea that people inherit and are born with traits from birth
Traits are considered to be stable which means performers will behave the same in most situations
What is social learning theory
The social learning theory states that we learn our behaviours from other people, especially those of high esteem to us such as role models or significant others
Personality traits are leaned via socialisation
Observe -> identify -> reinforce -> copy
What is the interactionist theory
Both inherited characteristics and the environment influence our personality
Combines social learning and trait theories
This theory takes in to account behaviour and suggests is can adapt depending on the situation
Who are the 2 scientists involved in the interactionist theory
Lewin and Hollander
What does Lewin suggest about that interactionist theory
He suggests the approach is explained by the formula B F(PxE)
This says that: behaviour is the function of personality and environment
What does Hollander suggest about the interactionist theory
He suggests that there are three layers to behaviour
He represents this by using a target shape of 3 circles
What is the inner circle on Hollanders diagram? What is it about
The psychological core
It is your core values, beliefs and attitudes. They won’t change
What is the middle circle on Hollanders diagram? What is it about
Typical response
This is your usual response in a given situation
What is the outer circle on Hollanders diagram? What is it about
Role related behaviour
This is your behaviour/how you act in a specific situation
Can change depending on the situation
How can the knowledge of the interactionist perspective improve performance
Coaches can predict behaviour
Coaches can identify situations that cause inappropriate actions from happening
Coach could use the approach to change player behaviour by encouraging players to adapt to specific circumstances
