Attitudes Flashcards
What is an attitude
A value aimed at an attitude object (an object you can have an opinion towards)
Attitude is a belief, opinion, feeling or an emotional response
What can attitude formation be
Positive or negative, can be developed through experience rather than innate (instincts)
What does positive attitude formation do
Promotes commitment to a sport and encourages participation
What does negative attitude formation do
Encourages us to not take part and that it is unimportant, this means that the sport will lose value to the performer
How can attitudes be formed
Past experience
Socialisation - seeing positive/negative attitudes and copying
Social learning - friends join so you join to
Media - seeing role models
What are the 3 components of attitudes on the Triadic model of attitude
Cognitive
Affective
Behavioural
What is the cognitive component of attitude? Give an example
A belief the performer has
Eg. I believe I am the best at football
What is the affective component of attitude? Give an example
The feelings and interpretation
Eg. I love playing football
What is the behavioural component of attitude? Give an example
The action of the performer
Eg. I play football twice a week
What are the 2 ways to changing attitudes
Persuasive communication and cognitive dissonance
What is persuasive communication
Using a significant other to try and talk the performer in to changing their minds to a more positive point of view
What should happen during positive communication
The person persuading must give the performer a clear message as to why they should change their minds as well as making sure they understand what you are saying to them
The performer must want to change their mind in order for this technique to work
What should you factor in when using persuasive communication
Timing
The role model
The relevance and importance
What is cognitive dissonance
Giving new information or presenting a performer with a new form of activity to make the performer question their current attitudes and help them to be motivated to change
What does ‘dissonance’ mean
Creating conflict that causes unease for the performer
