Personality Flashcards
What are the 3 theories of personality?
Trait, Social Learning and Interactionist
What are the further categories of trait learning?
Eyesenks Theory = Introvert, extrovert, stable, neurotic
Narrow Band = Type A and B
Somatotyping= ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph
Define trait
Inherited characteristics at birth. They are innate, genetic and stable.
- Always behave the same in sny situation
B=F(P)
Describe a Type A personality
- Highly competitive
- Likes control
- High levels of alertness
- Strong desire to succeed
- High stress
Describe a Type B personality
- Non competitive
- Lack desire to succeed
- Work slowly
- Less prone to stress
Describe Eyesenks trait theory
- 2 dimension model which identifies 4 primary personality traits
Extrovert and introvert in sport
- Extrovert prefers team sport
- Introvert prefers individual
Social Learning
Learnt through interactions in the environment, constant change
- Imitated then endorsed by social reinforcement
What influences behaviour according to social learning theory?
- situations e.g. those around us
- environment
How is behaviour learnt according to social learning?
- Through watching, imitating and reinforcement
- Not genetically programmed
Personality
Athlete displaying their own unique pattern of behaviour when performing
Interactionist Theory
Combines both trait and social learning.
- personality is modified and behaviour is triggered by the environment
Somatotyping
Ectomorph- Skinny
Mesomorph- Muscle
Endomorph- Fat
Determines which sport / position they will play
Define profiling
Links the relationship between personality and sporting behaviour, success and participation
What theory is linked to the interactionist
Hollander
Concentric ring
Psychological core = the real you
Typical response = response can be modified and learned
Role related behaviour = dynamic and changeable surface to personality
Discuss observational profiling
+ accurate representation
- alter behaviour if knowing they are watched, subjective, down to interpretation
Catelles 16Q’s
+ Specific to each person doing it, accessible, confidential
- loose concentration, not understanding q’s
Interviews
+ personal as 1 to 1
Free
Insight to personality
- awkward and uncomfortable
Not always truthful
Evaluation of Trait Theory
- Behaviours not always predictable
- Doesn’t consider environment
- Doesn’t account for people who adapt behaviour
Evaluation of Social Learning
- Suggests why people become interested in sport
- Doesn’t take in to account genetics
- Only provides one explanation
Evaluation of Interactionist
- Most psychologists use this
- Explains why personality of performers can change in different situations
Define behaviour
The manner in which an individuals acts
What is the impact on performance for the narrow band theory?
TYPE A
= Motivated to improve
= More likely to succeed
= Team sports
= Too controlling
TYPE B
= Lack motivation
= Wont make much progress
= individual sport
