Miss McColl - Unit 3 Flashcards
Barriers of participation in sport
- Disability
- Gender
- Socially deprived
- Ethnic minority
Social Stratification
Form of inequality based on wealth/status
How is disability a barrier of participation?
- Only 18% of disabled take part in sport weekly vs 40% for able bodied people
- lack of representation e.g role models
- Negative attitude
- Inaccesible facilities
- Although they have the paralympics they receive less funding and attention than olympics
Ethnic Minority
- Selection bias
- Racial slurs e.g football chants
- lack of opportunity
- unequal treatment, by officials
Gender
- Underrepresented = less media coverage
- Stereotyping and discrimination
- Gender pay gap
e.g Usa Soccer
women payed 5,000 per game
men = 13,000
What are the reasons for limited access to sports
1) Wealth = equipment and memberships
2) Attitude = Do you feel accepted in certain sport
3) Levels of disposable income
4) Stereotype = impact of the views of others
5) Lack of Role Model
What cases support social stratification
- 2008 Beijing Olympics = 50% of medallists from GB came from private schools, just 7% of the population
- 7% of total professional footballers come from private schools
Examples of racism
- football chants / slurs from crowd
- selection bias
- officials treating people unfairly
- lack of opportunity
What is centrality?
- People who are more academically superior play in central positions on the sport field, the decision making positions
- Black player mostly found in non-central
87.5% = running backs in the NFL
What is racial stacking ?
- Different people can be guided into different sports due to colour of skin/ ethnicity
- Ideologies that are deeply rooted
3,000 footballers in england and only 10 are asian
Sexploitation
How the media portray women
Fifa president = increase engagement, they have the wear tighter shorts
Why are participation rates so low in disability sports ?
= only 18% of people with disability participate on weekly basis
1) negative attitudes
2) Inaccessible facilities
3) Some disabilities are too severe
4) Lack of role models (not projected on media as much) BUT ellie simmonds
THERE IS…..
The Paralympics but less funding recieved vs Olympics
Sport as an avenue for social mobility (rags to riches )
= Venus and Serena Williams grew up in comton playing on public courts
- NOW 2 of the most famous tennis player
(faced all barriers but now role models and breaking down these barriers)
The role of media
+ Bring overage to minority sport (paralympics, challenging stereotype )
+ Highlight good role models = serena and venus
+ Report truth = drug testing
- Reinforce negative stereotype ( sexploitation)
- Only focus on major sport = lack of role models e.g women disability
- Highlight bad behaviour = negative role models, decrease participation
Opportunity, Provision and esteem
