Define Motivation
The drive and energy an individual is prepared to expend to achieve a goal
Why would a coach use a motivational strategy?
- keep them entertained
- Keep working to long term goal
Intrinsic Motivation
+ Internal Drive
- May need support as too hard on themselves
Extrinsic Motivation
+ Something to work towards
+ Boost confidence
+ Show family - Proud
- Overly reliant
- If Reward stops performer may stop also
Feedback Motivation
+ Positive = happy
- Negative = Loose motivation if feedback isnt constructive / nice
Role Model motivation
+ Set good example
+ Behave in correct way
- Imitate bad behaviour
- Loose motivation if role model stops
Goal Setting
+ Something to work towards - short or long
+ Manageable task
- Have to be realistic
- If not reached may loose motivation

situational specific form of self confidence towards certain situations

What should a coach say to boost self efficacy?
- Use praise & encouragement (confidence )
- Positive feedback (strengthen SR bond )
- Avoid negative comparison
- Avoid punishment (breaks s-r bond)
- Attribute failure to external factors (boost s.e as it is out of your control)
What is achievement motivation?
- Link personality and competitiveness
- Situation comprises of probability of success and intrinsic value
- Any challenging situation NACH & NAF behaviour will determine if the task is accepted or declined
What behaviour does NACH display
- Approach
- e.g Tennis player attempts ace on second serve
What behaviour does NAF display?
- Avoidance
e.g GS only attempts shots close to post
Characteristics of NACH
- Success is internal
- Persistance and perseverance
- Seek out challenging tasks
- Risk Taken
