Personality Flashcards
Nurture
Suggests behaviour is learned from significant others by socialisation
We learn from people we hold in high esteem= role models, friends,
parents……teachers
Socialisation
Developing personality traits by associating and learning from others
Nature
We are born with innate characteristics called traits. They are stable, consistent and enduring
three theories that attempt to explain how personality characteristics are formed
Trait, social, interactionist
Interactionist perspective
A theory which combines Trait and Social Learning to predict behaviour in a specific situations
What formula says that your behaviour changes depending on the situation
B= f(p x e), This suggests that behaviour is a function of personality and environment
How to measure personality
Questionnaires, observations, interviews
How can interactionist perspective improve performance
- The coach could predict potential aggressive or unacceptable behaviour- they could remove the player before
- The coach could recreate these situations during training
- The coach could try to change player behaviour by encouraging the player to adapt to circumstances.
- If a player understands their behaviours they can monitor and adapt themselves
- Core values may be hard to alter so need to be reinforced by significant others ie; coach, captain
What is the Hollander approach to the interactionist theory
You have core beliefs, typical responses and role related behaviours that determine what your behaviour will be
Credulous approach
you believe the theories. You accept a link that personality can predict behaviour
Sceptical approach
You don’t believe them. You doubt the link that personality can predict behaviour
What are the two types of social learning
Primary - from family
Secondary - from media
What are the benefits/ drawbacks of using a questionnaire
Quick, efficient and deals with lots of info
Biased answer, could be misunderstand questions
What are the benefits/ drawbacks of using a observation
True to life, during real game
Your behaviour may change, subjective
What are the benefits/ drawbacks of using an interview
In depth, specific
Time, similar to questionnaire
