Process where cultural values are learnt by associating with other
How do we learn our attitude
We learn from significant others when the information is reinforced or repeated
Behaviour that is successful and reinforced

CAB
Cognitive - your beliefs, knowledge and thoughts
Affective - your feelings or emotional responses
Behavioural - your actions or intended behaviour

What is cognitive dissonance
New information given to the performer to cause unease and motivate change
How can cognitive dissonance be used to change attitude
To promote a person to question their current beliefs
Make the activity fun to change attitude
Using rewards to promote positive behaviour
What is required for persuasive communication to work
You can be talked around but it is hard if core beliefs are stable making people resilient to change
The message needs to be understood
Quality new information
Situation/ Timing of when the message is given is important
New information should outweigh old beliefs allowing a change in attitude
The message should be given by someone of high status or a role model to have an effect
The individual may be resistant to change
How can negative attitudes be changed
Persuasion from a ‘perceived expert’
Making it fun when training
Allowing early success
Using positive reinforcement and rewards
Pointing out the benefits of exercise
