What is a dislocation
an injury caused when the normal position of a joint is altered.
What are the causes and characteristics of a dislocation
Dislocation is caused by a fall or a blow, sometimes from playing a contact sport.
• Dislocated joints are swollen, very painful and visibly out of place. You may not be able to move it.
Treatments for dislocation
Treatment can include manipulation to reposition bones, medicine, a splint or sling and rehabilitation. However, it depends which joint is dislocated.
What is a sprain and how is it caused
Sprains are when one or more of the ligaments are stretched, twisted or torn.
• Sprains are often caused by too much force being applied to a joint.
What is a strain and how is it caused
Strains are when muscle fibres stretch or tear.
• Strains often occur when muscle is stretched beyond its limits or is forced to contract too quickly.
What are chronic injuries
Chronic injuries occur as a result of playing sport or exercising for a long time
Characteristics of chronic injuries
Stress fracture is an overuse injury rather than a mechanical injury.
■ Muscle becomes stressed and transfers the stress to the bones, causing a small crack.
Pain when performing
• Dull ache at rest
• Swelling
What is tennis elbow
Tennis elbow is the inflammation of the tendons of the elbow.
• It is caused by overuse of muscles of the forearm; sometimes caused by playing tennis or golf.
