When are you permitted to go on or near the line?
You must not go on or near the line unless it is absolutely necessary in connection with your duties.
What is the definition of “On or near the line”
if you are on the track, or 3 meters from the nearest rail of any line.
When are you permitted to go on or near the line without a valid PTS certificate?
When using authorised walking routes, if its safe to do so in emergencies, to prevent death or injuries occurring.
where would you find details of authorised walking routes published?
In the Network Rail Hazard Directory.
When on or near the line, what precautions must you take?
Be in possession of a valid PTS card, Wear PPE correctly ensuring it is clean, carry a hand lamp during darkness or in a tunnel. walk in the cess facing traffic looking up every 5 seconds and if a train approaches be in a position of safety no more than 10 seconds before a train passes. raise one arm above the head if a train sounds the warning horn.
How should you cross the tracks?
Always cross over ballast to ballast, not stepping on the rail head or sleepers and avoiding movable point work, move in straight lines and don’t cross diagonally.
If you were caught between two trains on adjacent lines what would you do?
lie down in the 6ft and wait for the trains to pass, do not lie down in the 4ft.
What are “Limited Clearance boards” and what do they mean?
They are red and white chequered sign with words “Warning Limited Clearance” this means that there is no position of safety on this side of the railway line for the length of the structure, it is not safe to stand or be in this location when a train approach.
What are “No Refuges Boards” and what do they mean?
They are Blue and white checkered signs with the words “Warning no refuges” there is no position of safety on this side of the line for the length of the structure, how ever there is areas on the opposite side of the line.
What are “Prohibitation Warning Signs” and what do they mean?
Black pictogram of a walking man on a white background with a red circular band and diagonal crossbar with the words no safe access whilst trains are running.
this means that unless you are carrying out emergency protection do not pass this sign whilst trains are running as a position of safety can not be reached.
What does a yellow roundel superimposed on a signal post telephone mean?
You must only use this telephone in an emergency, as there is limited clearance between the telephone and running line.
If you were on or near the line and noticed signs of danger on a moving train, what action would you take?
Stop the train if possible showing a hand danger signal, if not possible contact the signaller.
From a position of safety what action would you take to stop an approaching train?
Display a hand danger signal. if you do not have a red flag, raise both arms above the head. During darkness use a red light or any light waved violently.
What is the minimum distance you must stand away from a detonator?
30 meters away with your back turned away if a train passes over them.
What action would you take if a detonator showed signs of rust or damage?
Get it replaced with any others.
