A

When on or near the line, what precautions must you take?

A

Be in possession of a valid PTS card, Wear PPE correctly ensuring it is clean, carry a hand lamp during darkness or in a tunnel. walk in the cess facing traffic looking up every 5 seconds and if a train approaches be in a position of safety no more than 10 seconds before a train passes. raise one arm above the head if a train sounds the warning horn.

How should you cross the tracks?

A

Always cross over ballast to ballast, not stepping on the rail head or sleepers and avoiding movable point work, move in straight lines and don’t cross diagonally.

A

lie down in the 6ft and wait for the trains to pass, do not lie down in the 4ft.

What are “Limited Clearance boards” and what do they mean?

A

They are red and white chequered sign with words “Warning Limited Clearance” this means that there is no position of safety on this side of the railway line for the length of the structure, it is not safe to stand or be in this location when a train approach.

What are “No Refuges Boards” and what do they mean?

A

They are Blue and white checkered signs with the words “Warning no refuges” there is no position of safety on this side of the line for the length of the structure, how ever there is areas on the opposite side of the line.

What are “Prohibitation Warning Signs” and what do they mean?

A

Black pictogram of a walking man on a white background with a red circular band and diagonal crossbar with the words no safe access whilst trains are running.

this means that unless you are carrying out emergency protection do not pass this sign whilst trains are running as a position of safety can not be reached.

What does a yellow roundel superimposed on a signal post telephone mean?

A

You must only use this telephone in an emergency, as there is limited clearance between the telephone and running line.

A

A

What precautions must you take when you are on or near the line when overhead lines are present?

A

Always consider OLE to be live at all times, do not go within 2.75 meters of the OLE, carry any tools or long items horizontally, do not tamper with red structure bonds.

How would you obtain an emergency isolation of the overhead line supply?

A

Contact the ECO either directly or via the signaller and state THIS IS AN EMERGENCY CALL, give your name, grade, employer, location giving OLE id plate, details of the line concerned, location calling from.

particular mention must be made if emergency services are waiting.

A

1.25 meters.

A

Emergency call to the signaller who will contact ECO and stop train movements accordingly. provide name, grade, employer, the location, calling from and what emergency services are required and request an emergency isolation.

What would you do if there was a problem with the OHLE when driving along on your line?

What about the opposite line?

A

On your line, pan down, emergency brake application and stop, contact signaller, on the adjacent line contact the signaller on the move if its safe to do so, if the problem would put oncoming trains in danger REC to the signaller.

If the signaller asks you to inspect the OHLE how would you proceed?

A

Forward at no more than 20 MPH MAX, Competent person to accompany the driver during darkness, in a tunnel, degraded weather conditions.
