Managing Incidents, Floods and Snow. Flashcards
What are the rules concerning snow on the railway?
Stop and tell the signaller if necessary to tell them if it may affect the running of trains telling them specially if the snow is more than 8 inches above the rail head.
What must drivers do when snow is falling or being disturbed by passing trains when driving MK4s/91 stock?
what reduction in speed would you expect?
Drivers of their trains must reduce to 100 MPH Max, 10 MPH below line speed and carry out running brake tests every 3-5 mins in full service of the brake for 10 seconds on MK4s
speed reduction of 20 mph.
What must drivers do during falling snow or snow disturbed by the passage of passing trains driving the class 8XX trains?
This answer needs rewritten.
What would you do if you did not achieve the desired speed reduction?
This would indicate that the brakes or the railhead conditions are affected and that running brake tests must be stepped up.
What are the risks of NOT carrying out running brake tests in the previously mentioned conditions?
Reduced braking or loss of braking as the brake gear becomes frozen or a film of water builds up on the surface of the brake disc causing the brake pads to aquaplane.
What actions must be taken when flood water is affecting the railway infrastructure?
Stop and report to the signaller, if you see any flood water that might affect the passage of trains.
if flood water is up to the bottom of the rail head what is the running speed trains can pass at?
Normal work, line speed.
If flood water is up to the top of the rail head what is the speed trains can pass over at?
Maximum 5 MPH.
If the flood water has completely covered the railhead or has/is dislodging ballast?
No movements, The signaller will receive information from network rail operations control.
