Intelligible verbalization
Purposeful behavior, related ot environmental stimul (not reflexvie)
PVS
No awareness of self or environment
No behavrioal responses to stimuli
No language comprehension
Intermittent wakefullness by presence of sleep-wake cycles
Preserved hypothalamic and BS autonomic function to permit survival with care
Bowel and bladder incontinence
Variably preserved CN and spinal cord reflexes
Recoveyr from PVS
More likely in nontraumatic injury
Brain death def
Sustained either irreversible cessation of circulatory and resp functions
OR
Irreversible cessation of all function of entire brain, including brainstem
In brain death, angiogram
Will show minimal blood flow
When are ancillatery testing studies performed?
If clinical exam cannot be fully performed due to patient factors
