Peroneal tendon injuries Flashcards
What is the function of peroneus longus during gait
-Evert and plantarflexes the foot
-Stability of ankle joint
What are some traumatic and non-traumatic peroneal injuries
Traumatic
-Acute subluxation (peroneal slipped out of groove)
-Complete rupture
Non traumatic
-Chronic subluxation
-Partial tear
-Peroneal tendinopathy
What are some causes
-Ankle sprains Hx
-Functional or structural Instability (peroneals work harder to control)
-Soft shoes (compression resulting in peroneals control)
-Uneven surface training
What are some symptoms
-Lateral pain at midfoot/rearfoot
-worse with activity
-rest decreases the pain
What are some clinical tests
-Pain palpation of muscle
-Stretching reproduces pain
-Contraction of the muscle pain
What are some treatment options
-Load management
-Footwear and orthotics
-Exercises
What is a strength program trying to achieve
-Improve muscle strength and endurance of the peroneal
-increase overall strength at the feet, ankle and lower leg
-Improve range of of motion at the ankle joint
What are some exercises to prescribe
-Squat
-Heel raises
-Eversion
-Single leg balance (keep first contacting ground)
What are some consideration when implementing a Strength and conditioning protocol
-What is their capacity
-If symptoms the next day worsen, dial back the rep ranges
-Once mastered basic movement, dynamic/high intense movement are next
