Peritoneal Dialysis Flashcards
Peritoneal Dialysis
More for Chronic Patients
Catheter is usually placed surgically
PD is initiated immediately or delayed for 2 weeks
Daily catheter care varies- Watch for S/S of infection- Sometimes they have a dressing especially in the beginning- Keep it clean- Cannot take baths- Only showers
Three phases of PD cycle
Inflow (fill)- Connected to dialysizer
Dwell (equilibration)
Drain
Called an exchange- 30-60 min
Inflow
Prescribed amount of solution infused through established catheter over about 10 minutes- Usually 2 Liter
After solution infused, inflow clamp closed
Rate can be decreased if pain occurs
Dwell
Also known as equilibration
Diffusion and osmosis occur between patient’s blood and peritoneal cavity
Duration of dwell time varies, depending on method of PD 30-60 minutes
Drain
Keep lower than body level
Lasts 15 to 30 minutes
May be facilitated by gently massaging abdomen or changing position
Ultrafiltration during PD depends on osmotic forces
Peritoneal Dialysis Complications
Exit site infection
Peritonitis- if fluid is cloudy could be peritonitis and need to call doctor and send sample to the lab
Hernias-Putting continuous pressure on abdominal cavity can cause the hernia, especially in older men
Lower back problems
Bleeding
Pulmonary complications- Diaphragm gets pushed up- PNA
Protein loss- Might need to stop and start hemodialysis
