What is appendicitis?
Inflammation of the appendix
What causes appendicitis?
Obstruction
What can appendicitis cause?
results in distension, venous engorgement, accumulation of bacteria
Leads to gangrene, perforation and peritonitis
Clinical manifestations of appendicitis
Periumbilical pain
Anorexia, nausea/vomiting
Right lower quadrant pain is persistent and continuous
Rebound tenderness, muscle guarding
Low grade fever
Diagnostic studies for appendicitis
Complete history
Physical examination
WBC elevation
Urinalysis
CT scan
Ultrasound
Complications of appendicitis
Rupture
Peritonitis
Treatment of appendicitis
Immediate surgical removal
Antibiotics and Fluid resuscitation
Patient teaching in appendicitis
Early detection by seeking health care in early symptoms, avoid self treatment
Avoid laxatives and enemas: Can cause perforation
Post operative care
Early ambulation after surgery: Day of or 1 day post op
Advance diet as tolerated
When can patients resume activity after surgery
Resume normal activities in 2-3 weeks after surgery
