Peripheral Neuropathy Flashcards
Damage to which type of nerve fibre would cause weakness, unsteadiness and wasting?
Large motor fibre
Damage to which type of fibre would cause numbness, parasthesia and unsteadiness?
Large sensory fibre
Damage to which type of fibre would cause pain and dysthesia?
Small fibre
Damage to which set of nerves could cause dizziness (postural hypotension), impotence, nausea and vomiting (gastroparesis)
Autonomic nerves
Disease of the spinal nerve roots
Radiculopathy
Disease of the nerve plexus?
Plexpathy
Disease of the peripheral nerve
Peripheral neuropathy
Why does damage to the peroneal/median nerve result in numbness AND weakness?
Both the peroneal and median nerves contain sensory and motor fibres
Progressive paraplegia over days up to 4 weeks
Guillain Barre Syndrome
-associated sensory symptoms as well
What is opthalmoplegia?
Paralysis of the muscles within or surrounding the eye
Around which days do symptoms peak in Guillain Barre?
Around days 10-14 (so basically 2 weeks ish)
Why can patients die in GBS?
- Autonomic failure (e.g. cardiac arrhythmia)
- autonomic nerves are affected as well (e.g. tachycardia, bradycardia, facial flushing, paroxysmal hypertension, orthostatic hypertension, sweating abnormalities, urinary retention)
Treatment for GBS?
-Immunoglobin infusion and/or plasma exchange
CMT 1a
Really common mutation in hereditary neuropathy
Treatment for axonal vasculitic neuropathy?
- pulsed IV methylprednisolone
- cyclophosphamide
