Neuro 5 Flashcards
What type of organisation is present in the auditory cortex?
Tonotopic
Fibres carrying info. regarding LOW frequency sound end in which part of the auditory cortex?
Anterolateral
anteroLOWteral ..lol
Fibres carrying info. regarding HIGH frequency sound end in which part of the auditory cortex?
Posteromedial
Damage to which part of the brain results in expressive aphasia?
Brocas
expressive aphasia also called motor aphasia
Damage to which part of the brain results in sensory/receptive aphasia
Wernickes
receptive aphasia also called sensory aphasia
The projection of vestibular info onto the cerebral cortex is unilateral or bilateral?
Bilateral
Where are the upper and lower visual fields projected in relation to the calcarine sulcus?
The UPPER visual field is projected BELOW the calcarine sulcus
The LOWER visual field is projected ABOVE the calcarine sulcus
(the macula projects to the posterior pole of the visual cortex)
Visual cortex and eye movements
The visual cortex is responsible for eye movements that are in response to visual stimuli e.g. tracking objects
The frontal eye fields and eye movments
The frontal eye fields are responsible for movements that are independent of moving visual stimuli
Difference between tracking movements and movements of command
Tracking movements tend to be smooth, while movements of command tend to be jumpy
What does homonymous mean
If vision is lost in the same visual field in both eyes
heteronymous = the opposite
What type of fibres connect cortical sites lying in the same hemisphere?
Association fibres
What type of fibres connect one hemisphere to the other (usually connecting areas with similar function)
Commissural fibres
What type of fibres connect hemispheres to deeper structures (including thalamus, corpus striatum, brain stem and spinal cord)
Projection fibres
