Perioperative Meds Flashcards
Antiemetics *Ex: Reglan, Inapsine, Phenergan, Zofran
[Preop, Intraop, Postop] *Increase gastric emptying and decrease N/V *S.E: CNS depression, drowsiness, hypotension, dry mouth, urinary retention, and extrapyramidal symptoms.
Benzodiazepines (Schedule IV)
Anxiety and Sedative Hypnotic
- Versed
- Valium (diazepam)
- Ativan
- Xanax
- Librium
- Halcion
- Ambien
[Preop,Intraop] *Decrease anxiety, induce sedation, induce amnesia, ease anesthesia induction.
S.E: excess sedation, impairment of mental/physical activities, respiratory depression, CNS depression, hypotension, pain/ induration at injection site, skin rash, and paradoxical excitement.
Narcotics *Ex: Morphine, Demerol, Percocet, Codeine, Fentanyl, Vicodan
[Preop, Postop] *Pain relief, sedation, and decrease the amount of anesthetic needed. *S.E: CNS depression, respiratory depression, N/V, pupil constriction, and decreased GI motility
Anticholinergics *Ex: Atropine, Robmul, Scopolamine (amnesia)
[Preop] *Decrease oral & respiratory secretions, antispasmotic effect on GI, bronchodilation. *S.E: tachycardia, excessive CNS stimulation then depression, constipation, paralytic ileus, decreases secretions, urinary retention, hot & dry skin, fever, blurred vision, and photophobia.
Sedatives/hypnotics *Ex: Noctec, Halcion, Sonata, Lunesta, Ambien, Visteril
[Preop] *Decrease anxiety, decrease the amount of anesthesia needed, promotes sleep. *S.E: excessive sedation, hypotension, paradoxical excitement, anger, aggression, chronic intoxication, withdrawal.
Neuromuscular blocking agents (muscles relaxants) *Ex: Dantrium, Valium, Diastat
[Preop] *Ease intubation and provide relaxation of skeletal muscles. Difference in onset, duration, route administred, SE, and patient status. *ACTION COULD LAST LONGER THAN PROCEDURE *S.E: Confusion and nausea
