Antibiotics Flashcards
Beta-Lactam Antibacterials
- Penicillins
- Cephalosporins
Purpose: to treat infections caused by gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
Action: kill bacteria by inhibiting synthesis of bacterial cell wall
Penicillins (Beta-Lactam Antibacterials)
Penicillin G
- penicillin G benzathine (Bicillin)
Penicillin V
- V-cillin
- Penvee K
- *Penicillinase-resistant
- (antistaphylococcal) penicillins
Ampicillins
- amoxicillin (Amoxil, Larotid)
Extended Spectrum (antipseudomonal) Penicillins
Penicillin/Beta-Lactamase Inhibitor Combinations
- (Unasyn, Augmentin, Zosyn, Timentin)
**Use: **Respiratory, GI, and GU infections. Best for Gram (+)
Cephalosporins

- cefoxitin (Mefoxin)
3rd Generation
- cefixime (Suprax)
- ceftiaxone (Recephin)
- *4th Generation
- cefepime (Maxipime)
**Use: **Best for Gram (-) bacteria.
Monobactam
- aztreonam (Azactam)
Use: Active against Gram (-) bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria.
