Perioperative equipment Flashcards
what is the goal of using heating devices during surgery?
to prevent hypothermia
when does an animal lose the most body heat
in the first 20% of the surgery when the prep takes place because of all the cold gels and alcohol used to prep and sterilize an area
what are some heating devices that are good to use?
water blanket (not likely to cause thermal burns since the water moves around), hot dog warmer (doesn’t cause thermal burns because it has an internal temperature regulator), forced warm air blanket (could cause surgery contamination since it’s releasing air)
what types of surgical lights are used?
ceiling or wall mounted
some also have autoclavable handles so surgeon can move around
what types of surgical tables are used?
they can be solid or split
some can also be heated
what is an electrosurgery machine?
a machine that uses electricity to cut or coagulate vessels
it can’t be used with alcohol so it is usually used with saline
it has a hand piece and a foot pedal
what are the two types of electrosurgery machines?
monopolar which has a ground plate and bipolar which doesn’t have a ground plate
what do suctions do?
removes fluid or air
what different types of suctions are there?
manual or mechanical
what is a risk of using a suction?
vacuum pressure so they aren’t used in the abdominal cavity
