what is important to do before a surgery?
be ready!!
have all instruments that will be needed in the OR, make sure inventory is well managed, and assure that the OR is well stocked, set up everything that will/ could be needed for the surgery (crash cart, drapes, proper attire, anesthesia machine, cautery/suction, heating devices, etc)
how should an OR be maintained?
should be kept clean, simple, and uncluttered with commonly used equipment readily available, door should be opened minimally
what PPE should be worn in the OR?
bouffant and shoe covers, wear a mask whenever a sterile item is opened, beard cover if needed
how often should the OR be cleaned?
there should be a daily and weekly cleaning schedule, soiled areas should be disinfected after every surgery, never broom or dust
what is involved in daily cleaning of the OR?
counters, tables, and equipment should be sprayed with disinfectant and wiped down, casters should be disinfected, empty and clean garbage cans, restock, turn off equipment, unplug O2 lines, sweep and mop
what is involved in weekly cleaning of the OR?
remove all movable equipment and disinfect, disinfect permanent structures (windows, doors, etc), empty and disinfect cabinets and counters, floor scrubbed with disinfectant and clean mop head, allow to dry, replace movable items, maintain a culture schedule and report
what are some important things to know when cleaning the OR?
keep all OR equipment separate, deep clean surgical prep room and pack prep room, mop heads should be laundered or replaced daily
what are some important things to be aware of to maintain sterility of the OR?
disinfect all items before introducing into the room, may wear designated OR shoes, don’t wear sweaters/lab coats in OR, keep the room temperature between 68 F and 73 F
what are some sterile OR conduct things that are important to follow?
when walking past someone either walk face-to-face or back-to-back (front side of your body is considered sterile and back side is considered dirty), step back to cough/sneeze, don’t drop hands below waist or raise them above your head, don’t walk between 2 sterile fields, don’t hover arms or head over sterile zone
