Periodicity Flashcards
What are the different blocks on the periodic table
s, p, d and f
What is the trend for atomic radius across period 3
Further right the element is, the shorter the radius as number of protons increase (same shielding, more protons)
What is the trend for ionisation energy across period 3
Increase in energy from left to right due to strong attraction, but dips for p1 and p4
What is the trend for melting points across period 3
lowest melting point from Ar, Cl, P, S, Na, Mg, Al, Si
Explain the trend for m.p. from Na to Al
Increasing m.p. as more electrons for stronger attraction in the metals
Explain the m.p. for Si
Highest m.p. due to its macromolecular structure
Explain the trend for m.p. of P, S and Cl
S exists as S8, P exists as P4, Cl exists as Cl2, so higher m.p. has more bonds(S>P>Cl)
Explain the m.p. for Ar
Lowest m.p. due its monoatomic structure
