perception pt 1 Flashcards
what is perception and give an example of it
interpreting something that we sense. while hearing is a sense, loudness is a percept
the activation of one sense activating another sense describes which condition?
synaesthesia
a person seeing a particular colour for certain letter or numbers is which form of synesthesia?
grapheme-colour
what is the McGurk Effect and what does it show us?
a change in auditory perception because of visual input (we hear what we see). it shows that there is an integration of sensory information
extramission belief states…
eye emit rays when perceiving something
list 4 processes in early visual processing
- light waves enter eye on retina 2. photoreceptors in retina convert light into electrical activity 3. electric signal sent to bipolar cells and then ganglion cells 4. signal exits through optic nerve to the brain
why do we experience blindspots?
there are no photoreceptors at the ‘exit location’
what happens in late visual processing?
primary visual cortex contains specialized regions that process visual features
what is a visual association area
they interpret visual information and give meaning
what are the two pathways of the visual association areas, what do they do, and where are they?
ventral: process shapes, size, etc in the occipital to temporal lobes
dorsal: process location, space, etc in the occipital to parietal lobe
true or false: perception is not constructive
faux
true or false: our perception is up to speed
false, there is a slight delay
Blindsight, subliminal priming and backward masking experiments are forms of what?
implicit perception
what is blindsight?
damage to the primary visual cortex where patients have no awareness of stimuli in their damaged visual field but can correctly respond to questions about objects in that field. perceiving without seeing
what is the backward masking technique
quickly presenting stimuli. masking stimuli with a second stimuli which reduces visibility and makes it unavailable to conscious report. stimuli still influences behaviour on subsequent tasks
