Define the selection process
List and Describe the 4 stages of the selection process

A
  • Choosing the best candidate for a job

1. Collect application forms and CVs
- Looking through large number of application forms and CVs, comparing them to the job desc. and person spec.

2. Shortlisting
- List of the candidates that fit the job description and person specification is made.

3. Interviews
- Candidates are asked questions face to face at the company

4. Testing
- Confirms info in the application form
- Assesses other skills and candidates’ responses to situations

5. Offer the Position
- Successful candidate is informed that they have been selected for the role
- can be done by email, letter or phone.

A

2. PANEL - candidate is interviewed by more than one person
3. GROUP - multiple candidates interviewed at once

Give 3 advantages and disadvantages of the interview stage

ADVANTAGES
* Follow-up questions can be asked
* Body language is on display → can be analysed
* Easy to compare candidates → if same questions are asked

DISADVANTAGES
* Candidates may buckle under pressure → under-performance
* Expensive → staff need to be trained
* Time-consuming → many interviews need to be held

1. Aptitude test
- tests abilities at a certain skill

2. Psychometric test
- tests attitudes or character of the candidate

3. Medical and physical ability
- required for certain jobs (mostly physical)

ADVANTAGES
* Large groups can be assesed at the same time
* Specific skills can be tested → good for certain roles
* Easy to compare candidate’s scores

DISADVANTAGES
* Time-consuming → tests have to be designed
* Expensive → resources have to be provided, staff need to be trained
* Candidate having a bad day? → not performing to their full potential
