Directing, Coaching, Supporting, Delegating
Directing
first phase of people management; limited flexibility for employee, leader has to define, plan, teach, and monitor; employee has minimal skills and need clear standards, goals, timelines with regular feedback
Coaching
second phase of people management; supportive direction with praise, encouragement, prioritizing, and feedback; employee has some skills
Supporting
third phase of people management; less specific direction characterized by listening, collaborating, and appreciating; employee is confident, skilled, self-reliant
Delegating
fourth phase of people management; lots of flexibility with little direction; characterized by trusting, empowering, acknowledging, and challenging; employee has excellent skills
