5 Characteristics of Dynamic Workforce
multigenerational, multicultural, multilingual, multitalented, multigendered
Allyship
intentional effort to support, celebrate, promote other internal/external stakeholders from historically discriminated against group
Unconscious bias / Implicit bias
belief about others that form externally to one’s core consciousness and affects how one treats or regards others
Employee Resource Group (ERG)
voluntary collaboration of employees who share a certain diversity dimension; aims to acknowledge and address inclusion in an organization from the perspective of a specific dimension of diversity (like gender or race)
Reverse Mentoring
roles are reversed; helps push info up the chain regarding obstacles/challenges faced by entry-level employees
Mentoring Circles
groups of people with comparable goals/experiences who work together to advance in their careers
Diversity Metrics
tangible means to demonstrate shifting practices and improved business outcomes; can help to evaluate impact of DEI interventions, demonstrate tangible financial returns; examples: demographic ratios at varying hierarchical levels, retention/turnover rates by diversity dimension, recruiting ratios, compensation audit
Four-fifths Rule
a way to test some diversity metrics; if the selection rate of a protected group is less than 4/5 the selection rate of nonprotected group for the same process (ie promotion), the disparity could reflect an adverse impact on the protected group
Psychological Safety
sense of comfort employee has to offer opinions, make mistakes, speak up in groups, ask questions, take advantage of open door or whistleblower policies
Lactation Rooms
this space + reasonable break time are both required for companies covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act to provide new mothers within first year of the birth; space must be other than a bathroom and must provide reasonable privacy and functionality
Screen Reader
computer program that aids people with visual impairments when they use computers by conveying the info in nonvisual ways; use audio cues and can include braille input/output functions
Closed Captioning
an easy to enable accomadation for hearing impaired people; can benefit non-hearing impaired as well; it is NOT a replacement for an ALS interpreter when that’s necessary
Ingroup Bias
tendency for individuals to prefer those they think are from the same social group, and rejecting others who they think are from a different social group (aka outgroup)
Affinity Bias
tendency for people to connect quicker and more often with people they think have similar beliefs/values/backgrounds/characteristics; if a company is looking for the “right culture fit” while hiring, they should have their culture well defined based on desired work outcomes and nothing else
Sexual Orientation Bias
prohibited under title 7 of civil rights act of 1964 because it falls within the category of sex discrimination
