Conflict Flashcards
Task-related intergroup conflicts
cognitive in nature; typically over goal definition or how work should be performed; low to moderate levels of task conflict with sufficient levels of trust and safety are healthy; high levels are unproductive and diminish team cohesiveness
Relationship-related intergroup conflicts
emotional in nature; based on discord within interpersonal relationships stemming from differences in personal values or style; almost always dysfunctional, volatile
intergroup intervention strategy: finding a common enemy
bring the two groups in conflict together by finding an outside group that both groups dislike
intergroup intervention strategy: joint activities
forces members of conflicting groups to interact and communicate to achieve a shared objective
intergroup intervention strategy: rotating membership
moving members from one group to the other group; builds awareness and perspective; useful in international relations
intergroup intervention strategy: conflict resolution meetings
begins with a meeting of group leaders to share feelings and commit to cooperation; each group independently identifies their feelings and what they perceive from the other group and they meet and discuss
Conflict resolution style: avoidance
ignore the conflict; could be okay for small issues but this would just make big things worse
Conflict resolution style: competition
whoever has the most clout determines how the conflict is resolved; effective if decision needs to be made fast; drawback is it can make people feel trampled on, decrease morale
Conflict resolution style: cooperation
preserving relationships is more important than being right; conflict is resolved via either accommodation technique or collaboration technique; effective when there’s enough time for coming to a consensus, or when maintaining harmony is critical
Conflict resolution style: conciliation
one party attempts to gain favor with the other party; whoever uses this style wants to get their way but they’re less aggressive than competition style
Conflict resolution technique: accommadate
one party decides to give in to the other in order to end the conflict
Conflict resolution technique: avoid
one or both parties ignore the conflict
Conflict resolution technique: collaborate
both parties meet to determine an outcome that is favorable or palatable for everyone
